Penguins no strangers to multiple overtime games, including a 5-OT thriller

Overtime playoff hockey is nothing new for hockey fans in Pittsburgh.

The Penguins have played 12 postseason games that involved multiple overtime periods.

In the wake of Thursday’s four-overtime marathon where the Florida Panthers outlasted the Carolina Hurricanes for a 3-2 victory in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, here’s a look at how the Penguins have fared in multiple overtime playoff games, in chronological order:

April 14, 1981 – St. Louis Blues 4, Penguins 3 – Blues forward Mike Crombeen scored a series-clinching goal at 5:16 of the second overtime against goaltender Greg Millen with a wrister from above the crease in a home win in Game 5 of a preliminary round series. The Blues won the best-of-five series, 3-2.

April 24, 1996 – Penguins 3, Washington Capitals 2 – Penguins forward Petr Nedved scored on a power-play opportunity at 19:15 of the fourth overtime period with a wrister from the left circle against goaltender Olaf Kolzig in a road win in Game 4 of an Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. At the time it was the third-longest NHL playoff game. The Penguins won the series, 4-2.

May 4, 2000 – Philadelphia Flyers 2, Penguins 1 – Flyers forward Keith Primeau scored at 12:01 of the fifth overtime period against goaltender Ron Tugnutt with a wrister from the right circle in a road win in Game 4 of an Eastern Conference semifinal series. At 92 minutes, 1 second, it is the third-longest playoff game in NHL history. The Flyers won the series, 4-2.

June 2, 2008 – Penguins 4, Detroit Red Wings 3 – Penguins forward Petr Sykora scored on a power-play opportunity at 9:57 of the third overtime period against goaltender Chris Osgood with a wrister from the right circle in a road in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final. The Red Wings won the series, 4-2.

April 22, 2010 – Ottawa Senators 4, Penguins 3 – Senators defenseman Matt Carkner scored at 7:06 of the third overtime period against goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury with a slapper from the right point in a road win in Game 5 of an Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. The Penguins won the series, 4-2.

April 20, 2011 – Penguins 3, Tampa Bay Lightning 2 – Penguins forward James Neal scored at 3:38 of the second overtime period against goaltender Dwayne Roloson with a wrister from the right wing wall in a road win in Game 4 of an Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. The Lightning won the series, 4-3.

May 19, 2013 – Senators 2, Penguins 1 – Senators forward Colin Greening scored at 7:39 of the second overtime period against goaltender Tomas Vokoun with a backhander from the right of the crease in a home win in Game 3 of an Eastern Conference semifinal series. The Penguins won the series, 4-1.

June 5, 2013 – Boston Bruins 2, Penguins 1 – Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron scored at 15:19 of the second overtime period against Vokoun off a re-direction from the slot in a home win in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference final. The Bruins won the series, 4-0.

April 19, 2014 – Columbus Blue Jackets 4, Penguins 3 – Blue Jackets forward Matt Calvert scored at 1:10 of the second overtime period against Fleury off a forehand shot from the right of the crease in a road win in Game 2 of an Eastern Conference first-round series. The Penguins won the series, 4-2.

May 25, 2017 – Penguins 3, Senators 2 – Penguins forward Chris Kunitz scored at 5:09 of the second overtime period against goaltender Craig Anderson off a one-timer from above the left circle in a home win in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final. The Penguins won the series, 4-3.

May 24, 2021 – New York Islanders 3, Penguins 2 – Islanders forward Josh Bailey scored at 0:51 of the second overtime period against goaltender Tristan Jarry off a forehand shot from the slot after a turnover by Jarry in a home win in Game 5 of an Eastern Conference first-round series. The Islanders won the series, 4-2.

May 3, 2022 – Penguins 4, New York Rangers 3 – Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin scored at 5:58 of the third overtime period against goaltender Igor Shesterkin off a deflection from the top of the slot in a road win in Game 1 of an Eastern Conference first-round series. The Rangers won the series, 4-3.
