The Pittsburgh Penguins made a series of roster transactions Tuesday morning, including placing defenseman Erik Karlsson on injured reserve.
The team recalled forward Tristan Broz and defenseman Ryan Graves from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, and forward Rafael Harvey-Pinard was reassigned to the AHL.
The Penguins host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday evening at PPG Paints Arena.
Notably, Karlsson, who arrived in Pittsburgh ahead of the 2023-24 campaign following a blockbuster trade with the San Jose Sharks, is set to miss his first contest since joining the Penguins.
The 35-year-old blueliner has played in every one of his club’s 208 possible games — the longest active streak on the Penguins — over the past two-and-a-half-seasons. He is sidelined with an undisclosed injury and will be re-evaluated in two weeks, per Penguins public relations.
This season, the three-time Norris Trophy winner has scored four goals with 29 assists in 44 games, averaging 23 minutes, 46 seconds of nightly ice time.
Karlsson, signed through 2026-27 at $10 million annually, is the highest-paid player on the Penguins.
Broz, 23, a second-round (No.58 overall) draft pick by the Penguins in 2021, has spent the past few years rising through the organization since turning pro out of Denver.
This is his second recall to the NHL and first since late November, when he made his debut Nov. 26 vs. the Buffalo Sabres.
A left-handed shot in the second year of a three-year, entry-level contract worth $925,000 annually, Broz has appeared in 33 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton thus far, contributing 11 goals with 13 assists.
Graves, another major signing by president of hockey operations/general manager Kyle Dubas before the 2023-24 season, earned his third NHL recall of the season.
Initially placed on waivers and sent to the AHL in early October, Graves was called up Nov. 4, before being waived and reassigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton again at the end of December.
In a season split between the AHL and NHL, Graves has one goal in 17 games with the Penguins. He has two goals and seven assists in 13 contests with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
The 30-year-old Graves is in the third year of a six-year deal worth $4.5 annually.
Harvey-Pinard heads back to the AHL three days after the Penguins recalled him to Pittsburgh.
The 27-year-old, signed to a one-year deal by Pittsburgh after spending the first five seasons of his career with the Montreal Canadiens, has yet to suit up in an NHL game in 2025-26.
A left-shooting winger, Harvey-Pinard has skated in 32 AHL games to date, scoring six goals with seven assists for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
His salary cap hit for the season is $775,000.
