The Pittsburgh Penguins placed forward Matthew Phillips on waivers Monday. Should he go unclaimed by 2 p.m. Tuesday, he can be assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.

Claimed off waivers from the Washington Capitals on Feb. 16, Phillips has appeared in three games with the Penguins since joining the club and has no points while averaging 11:20 of ice time per contest. The 25-year-old has been a healthy scratch for the past five games.

A right-handed shot, Phillips (5-foot-8, 160 pounds) has played in 30 games this season between the Penguins and Capitals and has registered five points (one goal, four assists) while clocking an average of 10:23 of ice time per contest.

Phillips is signed to a one-year contract worth $750,000 and is scheduled to become a restricted free agent this upcoming offseason. He is also eligible for arbitration.
