Penguins' preseason game to be held in Sudbury, Ont.
The Pittsburgh Penguins’ preseason game against the Ottawa Senators scheduled for Sept. 29 as part of the Kraft Hockeyville promotion will be held in Sudbury, Ont.
The location of the game was announced Wednesday by the city of Elliot Lake, Ont., which won the contest to host the game.
Sudbury is just under two hours to the east of Elliot Lake. The Sudbury Community Arena will be the site of the contest. That is the home venue of the Ontario Hockey League’s Sudbury Wolves.
Elliot Lake won a contest to host the game on June 15. While the game will not physically take place in Elliot Lake, the city will still receive a financial award to be put toward rink renovations and youth programs.
According to the Village Media outlet in Ontario, Elliot Lake’s Centennial Arena was not under serious consideration to host the game due to ongoing construction as well as capacity limitations.
A similar issue happened with a Hockeyville game involving the Penguins in 2019. The Rostraver Ice Garden was scheduled to host a preseason game between the Penguins and St. Louis Blues but structural concerns with that venue forced the game to be moved to the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry.
