The Penguins selected forward Will Horcoff (No. 24 overall) in the first round of this year’s NHL Draft.

Pittsburgh Penguins forward prospect Will Horcoff was named to the United States’ preliminary roster for the upcoming International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) World Junior Championship tournament.

USA Hockey announced the roster on Monday.

The Penguins selected Horcoff (6-foot-5, 201 pounds) in the first round (No. 24 overall) of the NHL Draft in June.

A sophomore at Michigan, the left-handed Horcoff has played in 16 games this season and leads the NCAA in goals (18) and is tied for the lead in points (26).

Also selected to the preliminary roster was forward L.J. Mooney, a native of West Mifflin.

Drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the fourth round (No. 113) of this year’s draft, the right-handed Mooney (5-7, 165 pounds) is a freshman at Minnesota. In 17 games this season, he is third on the team in scoring with 13 points (four goals, nine assists).

A final 25-man roster will be selected following a training camp between Dec. 15 and 23. The tournament will be held in St. Paul, Minn. and Minneapolis between Dec. 26 and Jan. 5.
