Penguins re-sign Wilkes-Barre/Scranton captain Taylor Fedun
The Penguins re-signed a veteran right-handed defenseman to a contract extension on Wednesday.
Taylor Fedun, who served as captain of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for the 2021-22 season, was re-signed to a two-year two-way contract through the 2023-24 campaign.
The deal will carry a salary cap hit of $762,500.
Fedun (6-foot-1, 200 pounds) joined the Penguins last offseason when he signed a one-year, two-way contract that carried a salary cap hit of $750,000.
Aside from a brief seven-day recall to the NHL roster in early November that resulted in being a healthy scratch for three games, Fedun spent the entire season at the American Hockey League (AHL) level with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. In 44 AHL games, the 33-year-old scored 15 points (five goals, 11 assists).
An undisclosed injury sidelined Fedun for the final 26 games of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s season as well as all six of that team’s postseason games.
Having overcome a broken femur he suffered during a preseason game in 2011, Fedun has carved out a 10-year career in the professional ranks that has included stops with the Edmonton Oilers, San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks, Buffalo Sabres and Dallas Stars.
With Fedun signed, the Penguins have 10 remaining players who are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents on July 13:
Forwards — Anthony Angello, Brian Boyle, Michael Chaput, Evgeni Malkin, Rickard Rakell, Evan Rodrigues
Defensemen — Nathan Beaulieu, Kris Letang
Goaltenders — Casey DeSmith, Louis Domingue
