In 22 NHL games this season, Penguins defenseman Ryan Shea has no points.

The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled defenseman Ryan Shea from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL on Thursday evening and assigned rookie forward Jonathan Gruden to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Shea returns to the NHL roster after being most recently assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Jan. 28. He has been shuffled between the NHL and AHL roster repeatedly throughout the 2023-24 campaign.

In 22 NHL games this season, Shea has no points while averaging 12 minutes, 28 seconds of ice time per contest, primarily on the third defensive pairing.

With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Shea has appeared in 18 games and scored six points.

A left-handed shot who can play both sides of a defensive pairing, Shea is signed to a one-year contract worth $775,000.

These transactions come after Gruden cleared waivers earlier in the day.

This season, Gruden has played in a career-best 11 NHL games and scored one goal while averaging 8:49 of ice time per contest while primarily being deployed on the fourth line.

With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Gruden has appeared in 41 contests and scored 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists).

A left-handed shot, Gruden has been recalled to the NHL roster on five occasions this season, most recently Saturday. In September, Gruden cleared waivers before being assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

In his fourth professional season, Gruden is signed to a one-year, two-way contract with a salary cap hit of $775,000.
