Penguins recall defenseman Ryan Shea from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, reassign Radim Zohorna

The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled defenseman Ryan Shea from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Wednesday afternoon, announcing the move on social media platform X.

In a corresponding transaction, forward Radim Zohorna was reassigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Zohorna was placed on waivers Tuesday but cleared, allowing for his reassignment.

Shea, a 6-foot-2 left-handed shot, has appeared in 22 games with the Penguins this season and is yet to record a point.

Signed to a one-year deal worth $775,000 in July, Shea made his NHL debut with the Penguins on Oct. 21.

The 26-year-old rookie is averaging 12 minutes, 27 seconds of ice time, skating primarily as part of the Penguins’ third defensive pairing.

Frequently shuttled between the Penguins and their American Hockey League affiliate, Shea has played four games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

The Penguins previously placed him on waivers Dec. 19 and most recently assigned him to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Jan. 13.

He is set to join the club in advance of their Saturday puck drop in Las Vegas vs. the Golden Knights.

Zohorna contributed four goals and three assists in 31 games with the Penguins.

But after a hot first few weeks after making his 2023-24 debut Oct. 21, he managed just a goal and assist over his past 22 games dating to Nov. 9.

Enjoying a bottom-six role within the club’s corps of forwards, the 6-foot-6 Zohorna averaged 10:04 on the ice nightly.

Zohorna, a one-year, two-way summer signing by general manager Kyle Dubas, carries a cap hit of $775,000.

He was previously waived in early October, but cleared and joined Wilkes-Barre/Scranton soon thereafter.
