In six NHL games this season, Penguins forward Kasper Bjorkqvist has one assist.

The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled rookie forward Kasper Bjorkqvist from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League under emergency conditions.

This marks the fourth time this season Bjorkqvist has been recalled to the NHL roster. In six NHL games, he has one goal while averaging 8 minutes, 22 seconds of ice time.

With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Bjorkqvist has played in 41 games and scored eight points (six goals, two assists).

Bjorkqvist’s recall comes a day after Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin was sidelined for a 5-1 road loss to the New York Rangers because of an undisclosed illness. Coach Mike Sullivan suggested Malkin would be a “game-time decision” for Sunday’s home game against the Detroit Red Wings.

Following the NHL’s trade deadline (which occurred Monday), NHL teams are only permitted to make four standard recalls from an minor-league affiliate before that team’s season is completed. However, emergency recalls do not count against that figure.

NHL teams can make an emergency recall when they are not in position to dress a standard lineup of 12 forwards, six defensemen and two goaltenders.

During Friday’s game, Malkin’s absence prompted the Penguins to deploy an irregular lineup with 11 forwards, seven defensemen and two goaltenders.
