Forward Sam Poulin was the Penguins’ first-round pick (No. 21 overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft.

The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled forward Sam Poulin from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL) on Monday morning.

Primarily deployed as a right winger, Poulin has appeared in 11 AHL games this season and is Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s second-leading scorer with nine points (three goals, six assists).

A first-round draft pick (No. 21 overall) in 2019, the 23-year-old Poulin is in his fourth professional season. In six career NHL games, he has one assist and has averaged 8:53 of ice time per contest.

This past preseason, the left-handed Poulin (6-foot-2, 227 pounds) appeared in three games and had no points, two shots and a team-leading 20 penalty minutes. On Oct. 5, Poulin was assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton after clearing waivers.

As a pending restricted free agent this past offseason, Poulin re-signed with the team in April, agreeing to a two-year, tw-way contract with a salary cap hit of $775,000.

In a corresponding transaction, forward Kevin Hayes was placed on injured reserve. On Sunday, coach Mike Sullivan indicated Hayes would be sidelined on a week-to-week basis due to an undisclosed malady.

Appearing in 14 games this season, Hayes has scored four points (three goals, one assist) while clocking an average of 9:27 of ice time per contest.
