In 40 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this season, goaltender Joel Blomqvist has a 22-10-6 record.

The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled rookie goaltender Joel Blomqvist from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League on Tuesday.

This transaction comes one day after All-Star goaltender Tristan Jarry was scratched due to an unspecified illness during a 5-2 road win against the New York Rangers, according to the team’s X social media account.

A native of Finland, the left-catching Blomqvist is in his first full season in North America. Appearing in 40 AHL games, Blomqvist has posted a 22-10-6 record along with a 2.15 goals against average, a .919 save percentage and one shutout. He served as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s lone representative to the AHL’s All-Star Classic in February.

This marks Blomqvist’s second recall to the NHL roster this season. He was previously summoned Nov. 9 and dressed as a backup for one game before being returned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Nov. 11.

A second-round draft pick (No. 52 overall) in 2020, Blomqvist (6-foot-2, 187 pounds) is in the first year of a three-year entry-level contract that carries a salary cap hit of $886,667.

In a corresponding transaction, the team assigned rookie forward Sam Poulin to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Recalled to the NHL roster on March 26, Poulin has appeared in three games with the Pittsburgh Penguins this season with no points while clocking an average of 7:47 of ice time. He was scratched for Monday’s game.

With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the left-handed Poulin (6-foot-2, 213 pounds) has played in 36 games and has scored 27 points (13 goals, 14 assists).

A first-round pick (No. 21 overall) in 2021, the 23-year-old Poulin is in the final year of a three-year entry-level contract that carries a salary cap hit of $863,333.

Follow the Penguins all season long.
