Penguins recall No. 3 goalie Tristan Jarry on eve of playoff opener
The Pittsburgh Penguins added a third goalie to their roster on the eve of their playoff opener, recalling Tristan Jarry from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Tuesday.
Jarry, 23, was passed by Casey DeSmith over the past year as the top NHL backup to Matt Murray. He appeared in n 47 AHL games this year, tying for 10th in the league in wins with a 23-15-8 record, 2.66 goals-against average, .915 save percentage and one shutout.
A former second-round pick of the Penguins, Jarry went 0-1-1 while allowing seven goals over two NHL starts in November.
He will meet up with the team in New York.

The timing of the recall was somewhat curious because Murray and DeSmith are healthy, and the AHL Penguins season is not over yet. However, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would need to win each of its three remaining regular-season games this weekend, plus have the Providence Bruins lose all three of their games in regulation, to qualify for the Calder Cup playoffs.
”They’ve got to win three and the other team’s got to lose three in order for them to make the playoffs,” coach Mike Sullivan said of the AHL Penguins. “I know (general manager Jim Rutherford) spoke with me (Monday) briefly that potentially he was going to make this move for us. I think it’s more in terms of Pittsburgh and making sure that we have healthy bodies available for the playoffs.”
The Penguins were scheduled to travel to Long Island after Tuesday’s practice in preparation for Game 1 of their first-round series 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the New York Islanders.
