Hours after acquiring a 40-year-old veteran hungry to win the Stanley Cup for the first time, the Pittsburgh Penguins added a player Monday who already has lifted the Cup twice alongside them.
Speedy wing Conor Sheary was acquired in a trade from the Buffalo Sabres, along with Evan Rodrigues, for wing Dominik Kahun.
The 5-foot-8 Sheary, 27, had 48 goals in 184 games with the Penguins from 2015-18, adding 13 more in 57 playoff games while playing for Cup-winning teams in 2016 and ’17. He was dealt to Buffalo two summers ago in a trade meant to clear salary-cap space.
For the Sabres, Sheary had 23 goals and 30 assists in 133 games, including nine goals and 10 assists in 55 games this season.
Kahun was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks this offseason in a trade for defenseman Olli Maatta. He had been playing on Evgeni Malkin’s left wing over the past three months except when he was out because of a concussion. Kahun had 10 goals and 17 assists in 50 games for the Penguins.
Rodrigues, 26, has five goals and four assists this season and has played in 192 NHL games across five seasons — all with Buffalo.
The Penguins announced a trade for San Jose Sharks veteran Patrick Marleau on Monday morning.
Keep up with the Pittsburgh Penguins all season long.
