Penguins scheduled to start goaltender Tristan Jarry against Jets
The Pittsburgh Penguins are scheduled to start goaltender Tristan Jarry for Tuesday’s home game against the Winnipeg Jets.
Coach Mike Sullivan announced Jarry’s status following an optional morning skate.
In 32 games this season, Jarry has a 13-14-4 record, a 2.53 goals against average, a .913 save percentage and five shutouts.
Throughout his career, Jarry has played the Jets in four games and has posted a 4-0-0 record, a 1.22 goals against average, a .959 save percentage and one shutout.
Notes:
• Sullivan labeled forward Reilly Smith and rookie defenseman John Ludvig as being available for Tuesday’s lineup.
Smith has missed the past six games due to a suspected left arm injury. Typically deployed on the left wing of the second line, Smith has played in 40 games this season and has 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) while averaging 16:14 of ice time per contest.
Ludvig is currently designated to long-term injured reserve and has missed the past 11 games due to an undisclosed injury. In 19 games this season, Ludvig has one assist while averaging 11:34 of ice time per contest.
While Ludvig may be available, it doesn’t appear likely he will be in the lineup as he was one of the final players to leave the ice from the optional morning skate. That is typically a strong indicator of whether a player will dress or not.
• Forward Jesse Puljujarvi is expected to make his Penguins debut after formally signing with the team on Sunday. Over the past two days, he has practiced on the right wing of the third line with Lars Eller at center and Rickard Rakell on the left wing.
The fourth overall selection of the 2016 NHL Draft by the Edmonton Oilers, Puljujarvi went unsigned as an unrestricted free agent this past offseason as he recovered from surgery to each hip. In December, he joined the Penguins on a tryout basis before signing a professional tryout contract with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League (AHL) in January. In 13 AHL games, he had nine points (four goals, five assists).
Those who participated in the optional morning skate included:
Forwards – Evgeni Malkin, Drew O’Connor, Puljujarvi, Colin White
Defensemen – P.O Joseph, Ludvig, Chad Ruhwedel
Goaltender – Alex Nedeljkovic
Sullivan has appeared in 799 career games as a head coach.
• Penguins forward Jake Guentzel has appeared in 499 career games.
• The Jets are expected to start goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. In 35 games this season, Hellebuyck has a 23-9-3 record, a 2.20 goals against average, a .924 save percentage and two shutouts.
Forward Sean Monahan is expected to make his debut with the Jets after being acquired via trade from the Montreal Canadiens on Friday. Expected to be deployed on the second line, Monahan has appeared in 49 games this season and has 35 points (13 goals, 22 assists) while averaging 18:27 of ice time per contest.
• Jets forward Mark Scheifele, the team’s top center, is expected to rejoin the lineup after missing the previous six games due to an undisclosed injury. Despite his absence, he remains the team’s leading scorer with 41 points (14 goals, 27 assists) while averaging 20:16 of ice time.
