The Pittsburgh Penguins scored three goals in 37 seconds Thursday during their 6-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers — and it didn’t even come close to breaking the franchise record.
The franchise mark for the three fastest goals is 27 seconds, established during a 10-4 win against the St. Louis Blues at the Civic Arena on Nov. 22, 1972.
The Penguins’ feat against the Oilers tied for 37th place in NHL history for the fastest three consecutive goals.
Forward Anthony Mantha opened the scoring at Rogers Place with his 15th goal at 2:20 of the first period. He then scored again at the 2:42 mark. That was followed by forward Sidney Crosby’s 27th goal of the season at the 2:57 mark.
Against the Blues in 1972, the Penguins’ Al McDonough scored at 13:40 of the third period, followed by Ken Schinkel’s goal at 13:49 and Ron Schock’s at 14:07.
The NHL record for three fastest goals is 20 seconds, set by the Boston Bruins during an 8-3 win against the Vancouver Canucks at Boston Garden on Feb. 25, 1971. Johnny Bucyk scored at 4:50 of the third period, followed by Ed Westfall at 5:02 and Ted Green at 5:10.
