Penguins sign ex-Coyotes forward Michael Chaput
The Penguins boosted their depths in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Thursday by signing journeyman forward Michael Chaput to a one-year two-way contract worth a league-minimum $750,000.
Chaput, 29, spent parts of the past three seasons as a member of the Arizona Coyotes. Last season, Chaput appeared in 13 NHL games and did not score a point. He spent the bulk of the 2020-21 campaign on the Coyotes’ taxi squad.
His most recent American Hockey League (AHL) experience came during the 2019-20 season. Serving as captain of the Tucson Roadrunners, Chaput appeared in 47 games and scored 29 points (16 goals, 13 assists).
In addition to the Coyotes, Chaput, a native of Ile Bizard, Quebec, has spent time with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks and Montreal Canadiens. Over eight seasons, he has played in 182 career games and scored 22 points (six goals, 16 assists).
The left-handed Chaput (6-foot-2, 199 pounds) was a third-round pick (No. 89th overall) in 2010 by the Philadelphia Flyers but never played for that organization. At the time of his draft, current Penguins director of player personnel Chris Pryor was the Flyers’ director of scouting.
