Michigan Tech forward Alex Smith (20) shoots past Western Michigan defenseman Cam Lee (28) during the first period of a Great Lakes Invitational game in 2016.

Even as hockey has come to a halt due to the coronavirus, the business of hockey continues.

The Penguins have signed undrafted free agent defensman Cam Lee to a two-year entry-level contract.

The contract will begin during the 2020-21 season.

Lee, 23, just completed his NCAA career at Western Michigan. In 26 games this season, the left-handed defenseman had 21 points (three goals, 18 assists).

“Cam is a good-skating, offensive-minded defenseman that fits the current style of play in today’s NHL,” general manager Jim Rutherford said in a statement. “This signing adds more young depth at defense for us. We’re excited to have Cam as a member of the Penguins organization.”

A native of Ferguson’s Cove, Novia Scotia, Lee (6-foot, 190 pounds) attended the Penguins’ prospect development camp last summer as an invitee.

He is the nephew of former NHL star goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

Follow the Penguins all season long.
