The Pittsburgh Penguins will play an exhibition game in Northern Ontario in the fall.

The Penguins will face the Ottawa Senators on Sunday, Sept. 29, as part of the NHL’s Kraft Hockeyville contest, which was won by Elliot Lake, Ontario.

It will be the third Hockeyville appearance by the Penguins, who hosted the game at the Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown in 2015 and the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry in 2019. The game was originally scheduled for the Ice Garden in Rostraver but was moved because of problems with the rink.

The contest includes funding for rink improvements and youth hockey development in the host community.

Location, time and broadcast information for the game as well as the rest of the Penguins preseason schedule are still to be announced.

Penguins president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas is a native of Northern Ontario, hailing from Sault Ste. Marie.

“The Pittsburgh Penguins are excited to participate in Kraft Hockeyville this fall,” Dubas said in a news release. “Having grown up in Northern Ontario, I understand how impactful the event will be for the people of Elliot Lake and the surrounding area.”
