Penguins sign ex-Hurricanes forward Brock McGinn
The Penguins appear to have found a replacement for forward Brandon Tanev.
They have agreed to sign former Carolina Hurricanes forward Brock McGinn to a four-year contract with a salary cap hit of $2.75 million.
McGinn, 27, appeared in 37 games last season and scored 13 points (eight goals, five assists). During the postseason, he played in 11 games and scored four points (three goals, one assist).
A bottom-six forward by most measures, McGinn averaged 14 minutes, 59 seconds of ice time per game last season, including 2:09 on the penalty kill.
While McGinn will largely fill the void left by Tanev, who joined the Seattle Kraken last week via the expansion draft, he isn’t exactly a carbon copy of rambunctious Tanev.
Last season, McCann, a native of Fergus, Ont., recorded 44 hits, 15th-most on the Hurricanes. In contrast, Tanev led the Penguins with 139 hits.
A second-round pick of the Hurricanes in 2012, the left-handed McGinn (6-foot, 187 pounds) has spent his entire six-year career in Carolina to this point. In 345 career games, McGinn has 106 points (51 goals, 55 assists).
During the 2019 postseason, McGinn helped the Hurricanes upset the Washington Capitals with an overtime goal in Game 7 of a first-round series.
