Penguins to start goaltender Joel Blomqvist in preseason opener

In 15 games last season, Penguins goaltender Joel Blomqvist had a 4-9-1 record.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are scheduled to start goaltender Joel Blomqvist in their opening game of the preseason, a road contest against the Montreal Canadiens on Monday.

He is expected to split the contest with prospect Sergei Murashov.

Coach Dan Muse announced his team’s plans in net following a morning skate in Cranberry.

Blomqvist, 23, appeared in 15 NHL games last season and posted a 4-9-1 record, a 3.81 goals against average and an .885 save percentage.

The 22-year-old Murashov played in 16 American Hockey League games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last season and had a 12-3-0 record, a 2.64 goals against average, a .913 save percentage and one shutout.

• The Penguins did not have any line rushes at the morning skate. The lineup they are scheduled to send to Montreal:

Defensemen — Harrison Brunicke, Connor Clifton, Matt Dumba, Ryan Graves, Finn Harding, Owen Pickering, Ryan Shea

Goaltenders — Blomqvist, Murashov

Defensemen — Nate Clurman, Marc Del Gaizo, Noah Dobson, Adam Engstrom, Mike Matheson, Jayden Struble

Goaltenders — Jacob Fowler, Samuel Montembeault

• Montembeault is scheduled to start the contest in net for the Canadiens and will split the game with prospect Fowler, a former member of the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League.
