The Penguins will start goaltender Tristan Jarry in net for Wednesday’s home game against the St. Louis Blues at PPG Paints Arena according to coach Mike Sullivan.
In nine games this season, Jarry has a 5-4-0 record along with a 2.27 goals against average and .929 save percentage.
Matt Murray started in net for Saturday’s 5-2 road loss to the Blues at the Enterprise Center. In that contest, Murray allowed five goals on 22 shots.
Over his past six games, Murray is 0-3-2 along with a 3.99 goals against average and an .852 save percentage.
Management is comfortable in allowing Murray to sort our his malfunctioning game with Jarry having emerged as a steady NHL presence this season.
“We’re going to try to make decisions in the short term that give our team a chance to win,” Sullivan said. “We also have the big picture in mind and we’re trying to help our players get to their very best game. And we’re trying to balance that.”
Notes:
• Forward Stefan Noesen is expected to make his Penguins debut two days after signing a one-year, two-way contract with the team. His last NHL game of consequence came with the New Jersey Devils on April 4.
In 22 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on an AHL contract, he scored 22 points (14 goals, eight assists) before signing his NHL deal.
What can be expected from a player who hasn’t appeared in a meaningful NHL games in eight months?
“My hope is that he’ll come in and he’ll make a positive impact in the game,” Sullivan said. “He’s had a real good start in Wilkes-Barre. He’s one of the leading scorers in the (AHL). He has 100-plus games of experience in the NHL. He’s a good hockey player. So our expectation is that he’s going to come in and make a positive impact and help our team.”
As a net-front presence with a handful of fighting majors on his NHL resume, Noesen also provides a physical component to the team.
“When you have someone that can ad that element or that dimension to your team, that makes you harder to play against,” Sullivan said.
• Sullivan said forward Zach Aston-Reese is scheduled to play after skipping Tuesday’s practice due to an illness.
• Injured forward Bryan Rust and defenseman Justin Schultz each skated in the morning and made progress in their recoveries from undisclosed injuries according to Sullivan. Each were ruled out for Wednesday’s game.
• Defenseman Brian Dumoulin (left ankle) was formally placed on injured reserve. He is expected to be sidelined until at least late January.
• The Blues are expected to start goaltender Jordan Binnington. In 21 games this season, he has a 13-4-4 record along with a 2.26 goals against average, .926 save percentage and one shutout.
