The Pittsburgh Penguins placed defenseman Egor Zamula on waivers for the purposes of a contract termination on Monday afternoon.
Provided no other team claims him, Zamula and the Penguins can officially part ways by 2 p.m. Tuesday. He would become an unrestricted free agent.
Puckpedia first reported the transaction.
The Penguins acquired Zamula in a trade on Wednesday that sent forward Philip Tomasino to the Philadelphia Flyers.
Immediately after the trade, Zamula was assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL) but he did not report, prompting the Penguins to suspend him.
Zamula, 25, is in the final year of a two-year contract with a salary cap hit of $1.7 million.
Penguins officials have largely been quiet about Zamula since acquiring him, but allowing him to walk would clear his salary cap hit off the books and give the Penguins more flexibility within the league’s limit of 50 NHL contracts per season. Including Zamula, the Penguins currently have 48 contracts.
A left-handed shot, Zamula has split the season between the NHL and AHL levels. With the Flyers, he has skated in 13 games and has one assist while averaging 14 minutes, 2 seconds of ice time.
With Lehigh Valley of the AHL, Zamula has appeared in three games and has two assists.
He previously cleared waivers on Dec. 19.
While he is assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, even if just procedurally, $1.15 million of his salary cap is excused from the books for the NHL club per league rules.
A native of Chelyabinsk, Russia, Zamula has spent parts of six seasons in the NHL, all with the Flyers.
