The Pittsburgh Penguins won their first game beyond the bounds of regulation this season on Friday, defeating the Columbus Blue Jackets, 4-3, in overtime, at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
Entering the day, the Penguins were 0-2 in overtime and 0-3 in shootouts.
On Friday, defenseman Kris Letang’s second goal of the season, only 58 seconds into the overtime period, supplied his team with the victory.
Goaltender Tristan Jarry made 26 saves on 29 shots to boost his record to 7-2-0.
“It’s another outstanding game there for (Jarry),” Penguins coach Dan Muse said to reporters in Columbus via audio provided by the team’s media relations department. “He had to make some huge saves.”
The majority of the Penguins’ offense Friday was generated by forward Sidney Crosby, who had a pair of goals. He opened the scoring with his team-leading 14th score of the season 6:10 into regulation.
Following a frantic goalmouth scramble in Columbus’ crease, Letang settled a puck in the high slot, veered a bit toward the right circle, then snapped a pass to the left of the crease where Crosby leaned on his left knee and directed a forehand shot past the right skate of scrambling goaltender Jet Greaves. Letang had the lone assist.

Blue Jackets forward Sean Monahan’s third goal tied the game at 13:40 of the first period.
Accepting a pass above the Penguins’ left circle, Blue Jackets defenseman Brendan Smith advanced forward and shuffled a forehand shot on net. Jarry kicked out a rebound to the right of the crease that stuck off of Penguins defenseman Ryan Graves’ right skate and pinballed to the top of the crease. Monahan barged in, collected the puck on his backhand and flipped to his forehand before depositing a wrister past the right skate of a breakdancing Jarry. Smith and defenseman Damon Severson secured assists.

The hosts took their first lead at 3:51 of the second period when forward Brendan Gaunce scored his first goal while short-handed.
Trying to corral a puck at the right point of the offensive zone, Penguins rookie forward Ville Koivunen was overwhelmed by pressure from Blue Jackets forward Miles Wood, who stole the puck and initiated a two-on-one rush through the neutral zone with Gaunce against Crosby. As Wood gained the Penguins’ zone at the center point and approached the right circle, Crosby slid down to prevent a pass, but Wood merely circumvented that impediment and slid a backhand feed to the left of the crease, where Gaunce punched in a forehand shot by Jarry’s blocker. Assists went to Wood and defenseman Zach Werenski.
That was the third short-handed goal the Penguins have allowed this season. Entering the day, only the Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars and Los Angeles Kings (four each) had yielded more.

Werenski’s eighth goal came at the last second — almost literally — in the second frame at the 19:56 mark.
Letang tried to backhand clear the puck from his own slot to burn off the final moments of the period, but Blue Jackets forward Charlie Coyle alertly disrupted those ambitions by intercepting the puck. Fighting off Letang and Penguins forward Kevin Hayes for possession in the left corner, Coyle was able to slide a forehand pass to the top of the near circle, where Werenski smacked a one-timer to the far side past Jarry’s glove. Penguins defenseman Parker Wotherspoon inadvertently screened Jarry on the sequence. The only assist was claimed by Coyle.

Penguins forward Bryan Rust’s seventh goal came only 13 seconds into the third period.
Off the opening faceoff of the frame, Hayes dumped the puck behind Columbus’ net from the center red line. Greaves vacated the crease to rim the puck to the right half wall for a teammate, but those designs never materialized as Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson fought off Wood and kicked the puck with his right skate to Rust. Curling above the right circle, Rust turned toward the cage and snapped a wrister past Greaves’ glove on the near side. Karlsson collected the lone assist.

Crosby tied the game at 8:28 of the third frame.
Following a neutral zone turnover by Werenski, Wotherspoon accepted the charity at the defensive blue line and banked the puck off the wall near the penalty boxes to Penguins forward Tommy Novak. Turning to his left, Novak made the easy decision to offload the puck to Crosby, racing off the bench for a line change. Allowing Novak’s pass to his off the right wing wall, Crosby hustled into the offensive zone, claimed the puck just below the circle and, after adroitly going backhand to forehand, elevated a wrister over Greaves’ blocker. Novak and Wotherspoon tallied assists.

“We were smarter with the puck,” Rust said in regard to his team’s play in the third period. “It helps everybody stay on the same page.”
In overtime, Letang claimed victory in less than a minute.
Protecting a puck in Columbus’ left corner to allow teammates to make changes at the bench, Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin fended off Blue Jackets defenseman Ivan Provorov and rookie forward Luca Pinelli before kicking the puck with his right skate to the near circle. Letang claimed the puck and fed it to the top of the right circle for Novak, who one-touched a forehand pass back to Letang. Off that game of hot potato, Letang lasered a forehand shot past Greaves’ glove. Novak and Malkin had assists.
