Penn Hills graduate Shy Faulkner earns NJCAA All-American honors
Shy Faulkner finished his 2019-20 basketball season as one of the top scorers in National Junior College Athletic Association Division III, and the Penn Hills graduate was honored Wednesday for his on-court exploits.
The Community College of Allegheny County sophomore guard was named third-team All-American after he finished the season fifth in the nation scoring 26.4 points a game.
“Shy is a pleasure to coach, and he was instrumental in the team’s success,” CCAC coach Dave Devenzio said in a release.
“If you need a basket, you want the ball in Shy’s hands.”
Several of his 659 points came from the free-throw line, where he shot 73.9 % for the season.
Faulkner, who is majoring in criminal justice, was nominated for the national award by the coach of Region XX.
Faulkner was part of a potent CCAC offense that averaged 91.5 points in 26 games.
He scored more than 30 points 11 times and hit for a season-best 40 in a 131-85 win over Butler County Community College on Nov. 18.
CCAC won seven of its final nine regular-season games and added victories over BCCC and Pitt-Titusville to claim the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference tournament championship.
The Wild Cats scored 123 points, including 74 in the first half, in their semifinal win over BCCC. Faulkner scored 25 in that game and then added 18 in the title-game triumph over Pitt-Titusville.
Faulkner scored a game-best 32 points in CCAC’s 99-90 loss to Anne Arundel Community College in an NJCAA Region XX semifinal.
The loss capped the Wild Cats’ season at 15-11 overall.
