STATE COLLEGE — The Penn State men’s basketball team picked up its first commitment from a high school prospect under new coach Micah Shrewsberry.

Virginia point guard Kanye Clary announced his commitment to Shrewsberry and the Lions in a social media post Thursday evening. Clary tweeted his commitment came after a visit to State College.

Clary is a prospect in the Class of 2022 out of Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, Va. Clary is listed at 5-foot-10 or 5-foot-11, depending on the recruiting service, and 170 pounds. He’s unranked by 247Sports and Rivals, and his offer list features Texas A&M, James Madison, Old Dominion, Radford, Hampton, Norfolk State and North Carolina A&T.

Clary is currently playing for Boo Williams on the EYBL circuit.

Penn State’s new staff under Shrewsberry has been active on the recruiting trail with new offers going out to some highly regarded prospects since he took over in March, and Shrewsberry has also been active in the transfer portal.

Earlier this spring, Penn State added guards Jaheam Cornwall (Gardner-Webb) and Jalen Pickett (Siena) from the transfer portal with junior college transfer Jevonnie Scott (South Plains College) also committing to the Lions. That trio will be eligible to compete for the Lions in 2021-22, but Clary is a building block for the future under Shrewsberry.

During the Penn State Coaches Caravan on Wednesday, Shrewsberry laid out what he’s looking for in his recruits.

“Fit is really important for me,” Shrewsberry said. “It has to be somebody that fits not just this basketball program, but fits Penn State, and fits this athletic department, kind of goes along in that way. I want to recruit kids that value this education. I want to recruit kids that winning’s important to them. I want to recruit kids that want to be better, that want to get better. They want to work on their games. I want to recruit kids that want to be a part of this community, that want to be a part of this campus. Those are the kids that will be attractive to Penn State.”
