Penn State names 6 captains, including 3-timers Sean Clifford, Jonathan Sutherland
Quarterback Sean Clifford and safety Jonathan Sutherland, both redshirt seniors, became the first three-time captains in Penn State history Tuesday when coach James Franklin named six players to the position for the 2021 season.
Joining Clifford and Sutherland as captains are senior safety Jaquan Brisker, senior defensive tackle PJ Mustipher, redshirt senior kicker/punter Jordan Stout and junior offensive tackle Rasheed Walker. Stout was a captain last season.
• Clifford has played in 25 games (20 starts) while throwing for two or more touchdowns 11 times.
• Sutherland, who blocked two punts against Idaho in 2019, was awarded the number 0 as special teams leader, starting a new Penn State tradition. He has appeared in 35 games.
• Brisker, a Gateway grad who has started nine games in his career, was named first-team All-American by Pro Football Focus in 2020.
• Mustipher was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection by coaches and media last season.
• Walker has appeared in 26 career games, with 22 starts at left tackle.
• Stout is tied for second in Penn State history with three field goals of 50 yards or longer (50 against Ohio State in 2020 and 57 and 53 against Pitt and Idaho in 2019).
