Penn State quarterback Drew Allar (15) walks off the field injured during the fourth quarter of an NCAA college football game against Northwestern, Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025, in State College, Pa.

Penn State veteran quarterback Drew Allar is feeling better these days.

Much better than he did when he suffered a broken left ankle against Northwestern last month.

The injury, which occurred late in the Nittany Lions’ 22-21 loss to the Wildcats on Oct. 11 at Beaver Stadium, ended Allar’s collegiate career.

Allar, who spoke with members of the Penn State media Thursday, provided an update on his ankle injury.

However, Allar did not want to provide much detail on what the first few couple months of 2026 will look like for him with regard to his NFL future.

“I had successful ankle surgery, surgery on my left ankle,” Allar said. “Rehab’s really good, off to a really good start. I’m not going to get into all of the timeline stuff because it could be, like, iffy. You never know if you’ll have setbacks or you’re ahead of schedule. Right now, it’s on a really good track.

“(I) have an amazing athletic team that’s helping me out a ton. Coaches are helping me out a ton. I got a great team around me between, like, parents and agents and all that sort of thing.”

Though not 100% recovered, Allar has been traveling with the program as the 4-6 Lions, who host Nebraska on Saturday night, navigate their way through a difficult Big Ten schedule.

Allar has been impressed with his replacement, redshirt freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer.

Grunkemeyer, who will make his fifth career start vs. the 7-3 Cornhuskers on senior night, has thrown for 689 yards and four touchdowns. He’s also been intercepted four times.

It’s worth nothing Grunkemeyer’s first three starts were at Iowa, at No. 1 Ohio State and against No. 2 Indiana in State College.

“I think (Grunkemeyer) has made really good strides,” said Allar, who finished his Penn State career with 7,402 passing yards and 61 touchdown passes. “I think you can kind of see that, just if you turned on the film, regardless of what the stats say. If you just turn on the film and watch his first start from Iowa to last week, you can see the growth every week.

“I think he’s made a handful of big-time throws, especially off our play (action) pass game. I think it’s been really cool to see the offense unfold with him at the helm. … I think we can all see that he has a really bright future ahead of him.”
