Penn State's Shaka Toney, Michal Menet, Will Fries drafted back-to-back-to-back in seventh round

Three Penn State teammates were drafted with consecutive picks in the seventh round Saturday.

Edge rusher Shaka Toney, center Michal Menet and guard/tackle Will Fries were taken with picks No. 246, 247 and 248 by the Washington Football Team, Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts.

The Los Angeles Rams broke the streak when they selected Notre Dame wide receiver Ben Showronek.

Toney (6-2 1/2, 242) led Imhotep Charter to the 2015 PIAA championship. At Penn State, he recorded four sacks as a redshirt freshman and five the next year while tying the Penn State single-game record with four against Indiana.

He started 13 games in 2019, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors with 6 1/2 sacks. He was first-team All-Big Ten when he recorded five sacks in nine games in last year’s covid-shortened season.

Menet (6-4, 301) started 40 games at center, was a two-year team captain and third-team All-Big Ten in 2020.

Fries (6-6, 309) has been an important piece of the Penn State offensive line since his redshirt freshman season in 2017, when he started nine games (one at left guard, three at right tackle and five at left tackle). He played both tackles positions in 2018, but stayed at right tackle as a redshirt junior. In 2020, he was a second-team All-Big Ten pick and the conference Sportsmanship Award winner while starting nine games at three spots (tight end, two at right tackle, six at right guard).

Overall, six Penn State players were drafted, starting with first-rounders Micah Parsons (Dallas Cowboys) and Odafe Oweh (Baltimore Ravens) and tight end Pat Freiermuth (Pittsburgh Steelers).

In the past four drafts, 23 Penn State players have been chosen, the most in that length of time since 27 were selected from 1993-1996. The Nittany Lions have had five or more taken in the past four drafts, the longest streak since 1978-1984.
