Penn-Trafford grad Nick Turowski continues strong season at West Virginia
It has been quite a start to his sophomore golf season at West Virginia for Penn-Trafford grad Nick Turowski.
After being in and out of the lineup his freshman season, Turowski is one of the top three players on the team.
The Mountaineers have participated in four events, and they have won two invitationals — the Island Resort Collegiate where they finished with a school-record 55-under par, and the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational at Mystic Rock.
They also finished third behind Texas A&M and South Carolina at the Gopher Invitational and 11th at the rain-shortened Cullan Brown Collegiate in Kentucky.
“This fall has been unbelievable,” Turowski said. “Some of the best golf I have ever seen.
“We were 55-under and 36-under (Mystic Rock). We have played special golf. The team is moving in the right direction.”
And Turowski has been in the mix.
He was third in the Island Resort event, shooting 15-under. His roommate, Ryan Leach, won at 17-under, and Kaleb Wilson was 16-under.
Turowski was low Mountaineer at the Gopher Invitational, placing fifth by shooting 3-under.
At the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational, the 2024 Penn-Trafford grad and Harrison City native finished third at 8-under. Wilson won by shooting 11-under.
“I am more consistent, and I am not making bogeys, which is the biggest difference in my game this fall,” Turowski said. “I am bogey free during my second rounds this fall.
“I am limiting my mistakes. That is where my good golf comes from.”
After his first season at West Virginia, Turowski scheduled numerous competitions to help sharpen his game.
He won the state R. Jay Sigel Match Play Championship, competed in the Sunnehanna Amateur and qualified for the U.S. Amateur. He competed in two qualifiers for the Amateur (Sunnehanna Country Club and The Club at P.B. Dye Golf Course in Maryland).
“There was high stress in the Amateur qualifiers,” Turowski said. “I had 15 tournaments scheduled. I am always ready.
“I am very lucky that I also have the West Penn Golf Association and Westmoreland County Golf Association for high-level competition. There are all those talented golfers at Hannastown Golf Club. You can always get a competitive game there. That keeps me at the top of my game.”
Turowski also said he is a phone call away from calling Mark Goetz or Palmer Jackson.
“I have earned something anytime I have talked to them,” Turowski said. “Both are out there competing, and it is fun to match them.
“I learned how hard it is to make it. It is extra motivation for me.”
West Virginia still has two fall events: Steelwood Collegiate Invitational at Loxley, Ala. (Oct. 25-26) and the Pearl at Kalauao Invitational ‘Alea O’ahu Hawaii (Nov. 5-6).
