Philip Barbaree Jr. might not be a household name among golf fans. But he made quite an impression on Pittsburgh sports fans Sunday.

After completing his final round at the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, Barbaree pulled a Pittsburgh Pirates jersey from his bag — with his name and No. 25 on the back — and put it on. The gallery around the 18th green roared its approval.

Barbaree, who hails from Shreveport, La., went to the Pirates game Monday with his family and his coach, Chad Darby.

Barbaree said Darby bought the jersey on the spur of the moment, and they stashed it in Barbaree’s golf bag for just such an occasion.

“We kind of had it in the back of our mind, but we didn’t know if we’d be able to use it,” he said. “We kind of planted it a little bit, and, thankfully, we had a moment to do it.”

Barbaree famously had his wife, Chloe, as his caddie this week and made a 5-foot putt Saturday morning at the completion of his weather-delayed third round to make the cut. He finished the tournament at 24-over-par and, despite finishing at the bottom of the leaderboard, will make more than $41,000, his largest pro paycheck.

Told that the Pirates could use some bats in their lineup, Barbaree said he doesn’t hit a baseball nearly as well as he hits a golf ball.

“They don’t want me hitting baseballs,” he said with a laugh. “I stopped at Tee ball.”
