Gabrielle Krieger made her mark the past four years with the women’s rowing team at the University of Alabama.
USRowing took notice of the Pine-Richland graduate’s talents and accomplishments, and the sport’s governing body recognized the multi-time conference medalist this week with an invitation to a national camp with international implications.
Despite the cancellation of the 2020 international racing schedule because of the continuing coronavirus pandemic, Krieger was selected for the 2020 Under 23 Women’s National Team Selection Camp.
“Being invited to the selection camp is something I have wanted for a long time and although the circumstances are not ideal, maintaining everyone’s safety is the top priority right now,” she said in a statement.
The camp was set for June 17-21 in Boston and the athletes were to compete for spots on the Under 23 National Team that would attend the Under 23 World Championships in August in Bled, Slovenia.
Krieger was one of nine selected to contend for spots in the Women’s Lightweight category where each boat must have an average weight of 130 pounds or less.
The Crimson Tide senior and her teammates had begun the portion of its spring season with winning results in a three-team home competition against Southern Methodist and Eastern Michigan on Feb. 29.
The NCAA announced the cancellation of the remainder of the spring sports season, and Alabama’s remaining seven scheduled events were wiped out.
