Pirates activate Oneil Cruz from injured list, designate LHP Andrew Heaney for assignment
Oneil Cruz is set to return to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ lineup after being activated from the concussion injured list Tuesday afternoon.
Cruz had a triple, three RBIs, two walks, a stolen base and two runs scored in two rehab games with Double-A Altoona.
The center fielder went on the injured list Aug. 13 after his head hit into the knee of sliding left fielder Jack Suwinski in the fourth inning of a 14-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers while both were trying to catch a fly ball.
The Pirates also recalled right-handed reliever Dauri Moreta from Triple-A Indianapolis.
In corresponding moves, outfielder Ronny Simon was optioned to Indianapolis following Monday night’s loss at St. Louis, and left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney was designated for assignment.
Heaney, who was moved to the bullpen earlier this month, was 5-10 with a 5.39 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 84 strikeouts in 120 1/3 innings. He allowed five runs on five hits in 2/3 of an inning of relief in Monday’s 7-6 loss to the Cardinals.
Moreta, who was 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA, seven strikeouts and one walk in five appearances in his first stint this season with the Pirates from Aug. 2-10, had a 1.69 ERA and nine strikeouts in four appearances with Indianapolis since he was optioned earlier this month.
In addition, Right-handed pitcher Justin Lawrence and left-handed pitcher Tim Mayza had their rehab assignments transferred from Low-A Bradenton to Indianapolis.
There are now 39 players on the team’s 40-man roster.
