Glenn Sherlock, a 35-year veteran in professional baseball, will join the Pittsburgh Pirates coaching staff, the organization announced Monday.

Sherlock’s primary focus will be run prevention and coaching the team’s catchers. He also will assist manager Derek Shelton and bench coach Don Kelly with game preparation and management.

Sherlock, 59, was a third-base coach, first-base coach and catching instructor over the past three seasons with the New York Mets.

He also spent 19 seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks in various roles, including catching coach, bench coach, third-base coach and bullpen coach. He also was the Diamondbacks’ minor league catching coordinator from 1996-97.

Sherlock also managed three years with the Gulf Coast League Yankees (1990, ‘93) and with Fort Lauderdale in the Florida State League (‘91).

A 21st-round draft pick of the Houston Astros in 1983, Sherlock, a catcher, played nearly 300 games in the minor leagues with the Astros’ and Yankees’ organizations. He reached Triple-A with the Yankees.
