Pirates add LHP Ryan Borucki, 3B Jared Triolo, RHPs Thomas Harrington, Kyle Nicolas to roster

The Pittsburgh Pirates replaced the four players they traded by adding three pitchers and a position player to the active roster before Friday’s game at the Colorado Rockies.

The Pirates activated left-handed reliever Ryan Borucki from a rehabilitation assignment to replace lefty Caleb Ferguson, who was dealt to the Seattle Mariners. Out since June 21 with low back discomfort, Borucki posted a 1.23 ERA and 0.82 WHIP with 10 strikeouts and four walks in 7 1/3 innings over seven appearances for Indianapolis. Borucki was 1-3 with a 5.26 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 25 2/3 innings over 29 appearances for the Pirates this season.

Jared Triolo was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to replace Gold Glove third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes, who was traded to the Cincinnati Reds. Triolo, the 2024 NL Gold Glove utility fielder, has batted .158/.253/.266 with six doubles, three home runs and 10 RBIs in 55 games in the majors this season. He hit .239/.397/.413 with two doubles, two homers and four RBIs in 15 games at Indianapolis, drawing more walks (12) than strikeouts (nine) and reaching safely in 12 consecutive games.

The Pirates recalled right-handed starting pitcher Thomas Harrington from Indianapolis for his second stint in the majors. Harrington allowed nine earned runs on 11 hits and five walks with seven strikeouts in two games (one start) for the Pirates in early April. Ranked their No. 5 prospect by MLB Pipeline, Harrington went 7-8 with a 5.48 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) with Indianapolis, going 3-0 with a 3.75 ERA in five starts in July.

They also recalled righty reliever Kyle Nicolas, who posted a 7.50 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in 12 innings over 10 appearances in the Pirates bullpen from April 11-May 3 and June 3-10. Nicolas went 2-2 with five saves, a 3.79 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 30 appearances for Indianapolis.

There are now 37 players on the 40-man roster.
