The Pittsburgh Pirates selected the contract of outfielder Miguel Andujar from Triple-A Indianapolis and optioned infielder Drew Maggi to Double-A Altoona, but Maggi isn’t going back to the minors just yet.
Maggi was appointed the 27th man for Saturday’s split doubleheader at the Washington Nationals, so the feel-good story of the season has at least two more games left in the majors.
Maggi, 33, received national attention when he made his his major league debut Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers after 13 seasons and 1,154 games in the minor leagues. He made his first career start on Thursday, filling in for Ke’Bryan Hayes at third base.
Andujar, 28, batted .250 (9 for 36) with three doubles, a triple and nine RBIs in nine games with the Pirates last season after being claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees in late September. He slashed .284/.364/.500 with eight doubles, a triple, three home runs and 15 RBIs in 23 games at Indianapolis this season.
Andujar will start in right field and bat sixth in the first game of the doubleheader.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Andujar, the Pirates transferred right-handed reliever Wil Crowe (right shoulder) to the 60-day injured list, retroactive to April 23.
