Pirates add righty reliever Andre Jackson in trade with Dodgers, DFA infielder Mark Mathias
The Pirates made a move Sunday to add bullpen depth, acquiring right-handed reliever Andre Jackson from the Los Angeles Dodgers for cash considerations.
Jackson was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Pirates designated infielder Mark Mathias for assignment. The Pirates acquired Mathias from the Texas Rangers in March, and he batted .231/.355./269 with two doubles, four RBIs, 11 strikeouts and 10 walks in 22 games in the majors this season.
Jackson, 27, was 1-1 with a 5.86 ERA, 31 strikeouts and a .245 batting average against in 11 appearances, including one start, at Triple-A Oklahoma City. In seven appearances for the Dodgers, Jackson posted 6.62 ERA in 17 2/3 innings before being designated for assignment on June 20.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Jackson hails from Cienega High School, which also produced Pirates second baseman Nick Gonzales, and was a 12th-round draft pick by the Dodgers out of Utah in 2017.
Jackson made his major league debut against the Pirates on Aug. 16, 2021, giving up two hits and four walks with five strikeouts in two scoreless innings in a 2-1 win. Since then, Jackson has gone 0-1 and had a 4.15 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 14 relief appearances in the majors.
