As rain began falling at PNC Park during the top of the third inning between the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals, crew chief and third base umpire Mark Carlson quickly signaled for the grounds crew to cover the infield.

Both teams exited the field as the tarp was placed. The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Willson Contreras hit a solo home run off Pirates starter Luis Ortiz.

No word has come from the Pirates as to when Saturday’s game is expected to resume play.

Ortiz has walked a pair, struck out one and allowed one hit through two innings of work.

The Pirates’ lone baserunner has been Rodolfo Castro, who got aboard in the second by way of an infield single hit to shortstop Paul DeJong.

In Game 1 of the three-game series Friday night, the Pirates rallied from a 5-0 deficit to beat the Cardinals, 7-5.

Per a Pirates spokesman, Saturday’s game is expected to resume at approximately 5:30 p.m.
