The Pirates work out at LECOM Park in Bradenton on March 14, 2022.

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced their spring training schedule, which includes 16 of their 31 Grapefruit League games and the Spring Breakout prospect showcase at LECOM Park in Bradenton, Fla.

The Pirates will open their spring schedule Feb. 21 against the Baltimore Orioles in Sarasota before playing the Tampa Bay Rays in their home opener the next day, followed by their only home game against the New York Yankees on Feb. 23.

One of the highlights is the first trip to Florida’s east coast since March 2006, when the Pirates will play the Houston Astros on Feb. 28 in West Palm Beach. The Astros will play the Pirates on March 17 at LECOM Park, their first visit to Bradenton since March 6, 2016.

It also marks their first overnight trip since 2000, as they will play the St. Louis Cardinals on March 1 in Jupiter. The Cardinals visit March 5, their first visit since March 29, 1998.

The Pirates also will host Team Colombia on March 3, their fourth time playing a World Baseball Classic participant. They played the Netherlands in 2009, Spain in 2013 and the Dominican Republic in 2017.

The Spring Breakout, which will be played against the Detroit Tigers on March 20, could feature as many as nine top-100 prospects. The Pirates boast baseball’s top prospect in shortstop Konnor Griffin, as well as right-handed pitcher Seth Hernandez, outfielder Edward Florentino and lefty Hunter Barco, while the Tigers have the No. 2 prospect in shortstop Kevin McGonigle and No. 8 in outfielder Max Clark, per both Baseball America and MLB Pipeline, as well as shortstop Bryce Rainer and catchers Josue Briceno and Thayron Liranzo.
