Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Chris Archer, right, leaves the field with trainer Bryan Housand before the start of the second inning of Tuesday’s game against the Washington Nationals. He was placed on the injured list Wednesday.

A day after leaving his outing because of shoulder discomfort, Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Chris Archer was examined by physicians, who recommended rest.

“We will reassess in about 7 -10 days,” Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday. “Chris will remain with the club and continue his conditioning program and continue his on-care and let the inflammation calm down, and we will progress as tolerated.”

#Pirates prized acquisition at last year’s trade deadline whose price from the #Rays was three top prospects, Archer was 6-12 with a 4.95 in 32 prior starts, who lost 20 of those outings, including each of the past seven https://t.co/dMKX8rmisz

Archer was placed on the 10-day injured list. Through a team spokesman, he declined comment, preferring to wait until there was more clarity about what is ailing him.

Tomczyk did not have many specifics, other than to say the medical team “is optimistic this is going to be short-term.”

“The inflammation is general. It’s not one specific location,” Tomczyk said.

Tomczyk said Tuesday was the first time Archer felt shoulder discomfort “to that level.”

“He optimistically hopes to finish the season,” Tomczyk said.

This is Archer’s second stint on the IL this season. He averaged 32½ starts over the previous five seasons.
