The Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday made a big addition to their pitching staff. Literally.
The Pirates claimed 6-foot-10 right-hander Aaron Slegers off waivers from the Minnesota Twins. Slegers was the Twins’ minor league pitcher of the year in 2017 but struggled over four stints in the majors last season.
A fifth-round pick in 2013, the 26-year-old Slegers had a 5.27 ERA and allowed 17 hits and just six strikeouts over 13 2/3 innings for the Twins in 2018. He had a 3.80 ERA in 15 Triple-A starts last year after going 15-4 with a 3.40 ERA for Triple-A Rochester in 2018, tying for the most wins of any pitcher in all of minor-league baseball.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Slegers, the Pirates designated right-hander Dario Agrazal for assignment.
