After missing 24 games earlier this season with a left groin strain, Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Colin Moran left the game against the Colorado Rockies in the first inning Monday after he was hit by a pitch in the left wrist.
Moran came out for warmups in the bottom of the first inning before he determined he could not continue.
“We had some imaging done,” manager Derek Shelton said. “As of right now, it’s clean. It’s pretty bruised. It was bruised when I got out there to check him.
“While he was hitting, it hadn’t bruised up yet. But when we went out between innings and we were on defense, he already had a bruise there. We’ll continue to look at it, and hopefully he’s just day-to-day.
Moran, who was the Pirates’ cleanup hitter Monday, was inactive from May 9 through June 5 after starting the season hitting .297 with four home runs and 19 RBIs in the first 32 games. Since his return, he was hitting .239 with no homers and four RBIs.
Moran also missed two games earlier this month with back tightness. He had played in 48 of the Pirates’ first 76 games before Monday.
Ben Gamel replaced Moran in the cleanup spot Monday while Phillip Evans, who started in left field, went to first base.
