The Pirates’ Ke’Bryan Hayes (13) is greeted by the team after scoring during the first inning against the Marlins on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021, in Miami.

Bryse Wilson pitched five innings for his first win with the Pirates, Cole Tucker had three hits and Ke’Bryan Hayes hit a pair of doubles in a 6-3 victory over the Marlins on Saturday night at LoanDepot Park in Miami.

Kevin Newman and Hoy Park added two-run hits.

The Pirates clinched their fourth straight series win and are 6-2-1 in their last nine. However, they are the only team in the major leagues that has yet to sweep a series all season and will try again Sunday in the finale of the three-game set.

“Every day, we come in and we’re not looking at our record,” Hayes said. “We’re just trying to continue to play good baseball, continue to get better at the things that we’re working on every day. I mean, we’re pretty banged up. A lot of our bullpen is hurt. A few of the starters are hurt.

“So, it’s the next guy up. We’re just going out there every day with a brand-new record, a brand-new average, a brand-new ERA, all that type of stuff, and just trying to play the best we can that day.”

Wilson (3-7) was making his eighth start since being acquired from the Atlanta Braves on July 30 in a trade for closer Richard Rodriguez.

Wilson took a shutout into the fifth inning before giving up a two-run home run to Nick Fortes, who was making his major-league debut.

Manager Derek Shelton removed Wilson at the end of the fifth, though his pitch count was at 68, because of hamstring cramping.

The Marlins got four hits off Wilson, who struck out three and walked none. The 23-year-old improved to 3-0 against Miami in his nascent career.

Tucker, who tripled, entered the game hitting .162 but helped the Pirates (56-92) win for the sixth time in their last eight games. The Pirates must split their last 14 games to avoid their first 100-loss season since 2010.

Hayes led off the game with a double off the top of the center-field fence. He advanced to third on Fortes’ passed ball and scored on a wild pitch by rookie Edward Cabrera (0-2).

The Pirates got a big break in the third inning when Newman’s lazy two-out popup to shallow right field fell for a gift two-run single when second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. and right fielder Jesus Sanchez had a miscommunication and the ball hit off the heel of Sanchez’s glove.

Park pushed the lead to 5-0 an inning later when he belted a two-run triple off the center-field fence.

“I had some struggles the last few months. I was overthinking at the plate, and I couldn’t do my routine things,” said Park, a rookie infielder. “I felt kind of rushed at the plate, and that comes from overthinking. I try to be as simple as I can at the plate, and I’m being simple right now.”

Tucker added an RBI single in the seventh inning.

The Marlins closed to 6-3 in the ninth when Hayes dropped a two-out popup that was ruled an RBI single for Lewis Brinson. With runners on second and third, Chasen Shreve escaped the jam by striking out Lewin Diaz to end it.

The Pirates had chances to score more, but Michael Perez sabotaged two scoring opportunities because of poor bunting and was also thrown out attempting to steal second base when he missed a sign from third-base coach Joey Cora.

Enyel De Los Santos pitched a scoreless sixth single in his Pirates’ debut. The right-hander was claimed off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies earlier this week and became the 60th player to appear in a game for the Pirates this season, extending a club record.

The Pirates will call up Max Kranick (1-3, 7.66) from Triple-A Indianapolis to start Sunday to pitch against Sandy Alcantara (9-13, 3.10) at 1:10 p.m.
