Pirates farm report for July 23, 2023: Bubba Chandler allows 1 hit, fans 6 in Grasshoppers' win

INDIANAPOLIS (Triple-A, 44-51) dropped a 9-4 decision to Iowa (Cubs). 2B Alika Williams (.305) was 2 for 4 with three RBIs. RF/LF Canaan Smith-Njigba (.254) was 2 for 3 with a double and RBI. SS Rodolfo Castro (.115) was 1 for 5 with a run scored. C Jason Delay (.214) was 1 for 4. RHP Luis Ortiz (2-4, 4.71) allowed five runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts in four innings and took the loss. RHP Rob Zastrynzny (5.40) and RHP Duane Underwood Jr. (9.00) each worked a scoreless inning and didn’t allow a hit.

Next: Tuesday vs. Louisville (Reds), 7:05 p.m.

ALTOONA (Double-A, 42-44) shut out Reading (Phillies), 1-0. Five Curve pitchers combined to limit Reading to four hits and four walks with eight strikeouts. RHP Noe Toribio (2-2, 3.82) earned the win after allowing two hits in one inning of relief. LHP Braxton Ascraft (0.00) tossed three no-hit innings with four strikeouts. RHP Oliver Garcia (4.65) earned his sixth save. RF Mike Jarvis (.167) singled home DH Abrahan Gutierrez (.243) with the lone run in the seventh inning. LF Matt Fraizer (.248) was 1 for 4.

Next: Tuesday at Harrisburg (Nationals), 6:30 p.m.

GREENSBORO (High-A, 44-43) smashed Wilmington (Nationals), 8-1. The Grasshoppers scored four runs in the first and fifth innings. RHP Bubba Chandler (5-3, 5.79) allowed one hit with one walk and six strikeouts in five innings to earn the blowout victory. CF Jase Bowen (.261) had a triple and two RBIs. RF Will Matthiessen (.243) hit his 10th homer and was 2 for 5. LF Luke Brown (.207) hit two doubles. 3B Jack Brannigan (.250) and 2B Francisco Acuna (.313) each went 2 for 5 with an RBI.

BRADENTON (Low-A, 51-38) lost 11-7 to Fort Myers (Twins). Fort Myers scored two runs in the top of the eighth and eight in the top of the ninth to rally for the win. 1B Josiah Sightler (.516) was 3 for 4, including a two-run home run. 3B Yordany De Los Santos (.234) was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, including a solo homer. SS Jesus Castillo (.225) notched his 29th RBI of the season. DH Termarr Johnson (.255) was 2 for 4 with two runs scored. C Geovanny Planchart (.249) was 2 for 4 with a double. RHP Wilber Dotel (2.68) tossed five innings, allowing one run on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts. RHP Elijah Birdsong (1-2, 5.82) took the loss after giving up five runs on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts in an inning of relief.
