Pirates farm report for May 21, 2023: Quinn Priester shines again in Indians victory

INDIANAPOLIS (Triple-A, 21-23) beat Iowa (Cubs), 5-1. RHP Quinn Priester (5-3, 4.12) tossed five shutout innings, allowing five hits with two walks and two strikeouts to earn his fourth straight win this month. He threw 84 pitches, including 58 strikes. 1B Malcom Nunez (.244) was 2 for 3 with a three-run homer. 2B Nick Gonzales (.268), LF Canaan Smith-Njigba (.220) and C Endy Rodriguez (.239) each went 1 for 4. Smith-Njigba doubled.

Next: Tuesday at Columbus (Guardians), 7:05 p.m.

ALTOONA (Double-A, 18-19) lost to Bowie (Orioles), 5-2. DH Mason Martin (.190) hit his seventh home run of the season. 2B Drew Maggi (.190) doubled. SS Liover Peguero (.273) and CF Lolo Sanchez each went 1 for 5. LHP Jared Jones (0-2, 3.00) allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeouts in four innings and took the loss.

GREENSBORO (High-A, 20-19) lost a slugfest against Asheville (Astros), 10-9. DH Will Matthiessen (.212) was 3 for 5 with a two-run homer. CF Sammy Siani (.247) hit a solo home run. SS Tsung-Che Cheng (.282) and 3B Jackson Glenn (.337) each were 3 for 5 with an RBI. 1B Jase Bowen (.258) knocked in two runs. RHP Santiago Florez (2-1, 5.52) took the loss after allowing two runs on one hit with a walk and strikeout in one inning of relief.

BRADENTON (Low-A, 21-18) lost 4-2 to Clearwater (Phillies). CF Rodolfo Nolasco (.288) hit a two-run home run to account for Bradenton’s two runs and lone hit on the afternoon. 2B Termarr Johnson (.250) was 0 for 4. RHP Derek Diamond (2-3, 5.97) started and allowed four runs on five hits with two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings to take the loss.
