Pirates farm report for May 23, 2023: Jacob Gonzalez homers in Altoona win

INDIANAPOLIS (Triple-A, 21-24) saw a ninth-inning rally fall short in a 6-5 loss to Columbus (Guardians). LF Canaan Smith-Njigba (.222) hit a solo home run, his third, and walked. C Endy Rodríguez (.248) doubled twice, walked and scored a run. DH Aaron Shackelford (.255) hit an RBI double, and 3B Nick Gonzalez (.266) smacked a two-run single. 1B Malcom Nuñez (.254) hit two RBI singles, including one in the top of the ninth, and was hit by a pitch. RHP Osvaldo Bido (3.83) went 4⅔ innings, gave up four runs on five hits, served up a solo home run, walked five and struck out three. RHP Chase De Jong (0-1, 1.42) gave up two runs (both unearned) on two hits and walked one in 1⅓ innings.

Next: Wednesday at Columbus (Guardians), 7:05 p.m.

ALTOONA (Double-A, 19-19) scored six runs in the eighth to defeat Hartford (Rockies), 6-3. DH Jacob Gonzalez (.253) opened the scoring for the Curve with a two-run home run, his third. RF Connor Scott (.170) slapped a three-run triple, and LF Fabricio Macias (.267) brought Scott home with a sacrifice fly. Scott also doubled earlier in the game. C Henry Davis (.296) went 1 for 4 with a walk, a single and a strikeout. Starting RHP pitcher Sean Sullivan (2.60) went seven innings, allowing three runs, one walk and a two-run home run and struck out five for a no decision. RHP Brad Case (1-0, 4.91) allowed two walks and one hit in a scoreless inning of work. RHP Oliver Garcia (3.38) struck out one and gave up two hits in a scoreless ninth for his second save.

Next: Wednesday vs. Hartford (Rockies), 11:00 a.m.

GREENSBORO (High-A, 21-19) beat Bowling Green (Rays), 10-6. SS Mike Jarvis (.214) hit his seventh home run, a two-run blast in the first inning, and later hit a double. C Wyatt Hendrie (.281) hit a solo home run, his second of the year and also doubled. RF Tres Gonzalez (.293) walked twice, stole a base and scored a run. LF Jase Bowen (.263) hit an RBI single in the sixth and singled later in the eighth and finished with two RBIs. RHP Po-Yu Chen (1-3, 5.20) allowed four hits, including a solo home run, and struck out six in five innings of work. RHP Michell Miliano (4.30) was roughed up in his one inning, giving up four runs on four hits, including a three-run home run. LHP Cy Nielson (2.84) shut down Bowing Green with two shutout innings, striking out four.

BRADENTON (Low-A, 22-18) walked off Jupiter (Marlins), 3-2, in 10 innings. RF Shalin Polanco (.193) singled in the bottom of the 10th when Jupiter’s shortstop let a pop fly drop, allowing DH Rodolfo Nolasco (.276) to score. Nolasco opened the scoring for the Marauders with a sac fly in the fourth. 2B Termarr Johnson (.265) hit two singles, including an RBI single in the sixth to tie the game. CF Travis Swaggerty went 0 for 1 with a walk and a run scored in a rehab start. RHP Owen Kellington (4.39) started and went four, giving up two runs on three hits and fanning one. RHPs Joshua Loeschorn (4.86) and Blake Cederlind (16.20) each struck out two in two shutout innings. RHP Elijah Birdsong (1-0, 1.20) got the win, tossing a scoreless 10th and striking out a pair.
