Pirates farm report for May 25, 2023: Andreas Alvarez homers twice in Altoona blowout win

INDIANAPOLIS (Triple-A, 22-25) gave up two in the bottom of the ninth and lost 5-4 to Columbus (Guardians). 1B Aaron Shackelford (.268) went 2 for 2 with two homers, his fifth and sixth of the season, and three RBIs. Indiananpolis had only four other hits, all singles. LF Canaan Smith-Njigba (.234) went 1 for 4 with a run scored. RF Cal Mitchell (.258) was 1 for 4 with an RBI. SS Jared Triolo (.238) went 1 for 3 with a run scored. RHP Yerry De Los Santos (0-4, 6.32) took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. LHP Caleb Smith (6.70) started and went 5.1 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts. RHP Hunter Stratton (2.70) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings and LHP Angel Perdomo (2.79) threw a scoreless frame.

Next: Friday at Columbus (Guardians), 7:05 p.m.

ALTOONA (Double-A, 21-19) obliterated Hartford (Rockies), 16-0. SS Andres Alvarez (.197) went 2 for 5 with two home runs, a grand slam and a two-run shot, his third and fourth of the season. 1B Mason Martin went 2 for 4 with a three-run homer, his eighth. 3B Claudio Finol (.231) went 2 for 5 with a two-run homer, his second. C Henry Davis (.303) went 2 for 5 with two runs scored. RF Matt Frazier (.250) went 1 for 3 with a double, two walks and three runs scored. RHP Kyle Nicolas (3-5, 4.65) started and went five innings, allowing three hits and two walks and striking out six. LHP Braeden Ogle (6.60) and RHP Brad Case (3.18) each pitched two innings of relief. Ogle gave up one hit and Case gave up none.

Next: Friday vs. Hartford (Rockies), 6 p.m.

GREENSBORO (High-A, 22-20) lost to Bowling Green (Rays), 5-2. RHP Bubba Chandler (2-2, 6.62) started and went 4.2 innings. He gave up eight hits and a walk but allowed just two runs, one earned, with seven strikeouts. 2B Tsung-Che Cheng (.294) went 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs. 3B Brenden Dixon (.200) went 1 for 3 with a walk and a run scored. C Wyatt Hendrie (.286) went 1 for 3 with a run scored. CF Jase Bowen (.245) went 0 for 5 with four strikeouts.

Next: Friday vs. Bowling Green (Rays), 6:30 p.m.

BRADENTON (Low-A, 23-18) beat Jupiter (Marlins), 1-0, on a walk-off RBI single by CF Shalin Polanco (.197) in the bottom of the ninth. Three pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout. RHP Thomas Harrington (2.77) started and went six innings, allowing two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. RHP Ryan Harbin (1.47) pitched two innings, allowing no hits and two walks and fanning two. RHP Yunior Thibo (2-2, 2.87) pitched a perfect ninth to earn the win. RF Travis Swaggerty (.500), rehabbing from an illness, went 1 for 1 and walked twice. 2B Termarr Johnson (.254) was 0 for 3 with a walk. The game was scheduled for seven innings because it was supposed to be part of a doubleheader, so it technically was an extra-innings win for the Marauders. The second game ended up getting rained out and will be made up as part of a doubleheader Friday.

Next: Friday vs. Jupiter (Marlins), doubleheader, 5 p.m.
