Pirates farm report for Sept. 2, 2025: Relative of Roberto Clemente homers in Indianapolis win

INDIANAPOLIS (Triple-A, 76-56) got past Columbus (Guardians), 5-3. DH Nelson Velazquez (.203) went 1 for 4 with a two-run homer in the eighth to break a 3-3 tie. Velasquez, a distant relative of Roberto Clemente, was playing his first game with Indianapolis. A 26-year-old veteran of 194 MLB games, Velasquez was released by the Royals in May. C Rafael Flores (.265) went 2 for 4 with a two-run homer, his sixth in Triple-A. 3B Alika Williams (.272) went 1 for 5 with his ninth homer. RHP Jarod Bayless (3.95) started and went 4 ⅔ innings, allowing one run on three hits, including a homer. He walked one and struck out one. RHP Brandan Bidois (1-0, 0.00) pitched 1⅓ scoreless innings to earn the win. RHP Ryan Harbin (5.14) threw a scoreless ninth for his first save.

In the seventh inning, Griffin was hit in the head by a pitch from Mars graduate Will Bednar, but he stayed in the game. 2B Termarr Johnson (.267) went 2 for 3 with two walks and two runs scored. 3B Javier Rivas (.253) went 3 for 4 with two doubles, a run scored and three RBIs. 1B Duce Gourson (.266) went 2 for 5 with a run scored and two RBIs. RF Esmerlyn Valdez (.273) went 2 for 4 with a run scored and RBI. DH Nick Cimillo (.236) went 1 for 4 with a double, run scored and two RBIs. C Derek Berg (.308) went 2 for 4 with a walk, run scored and RBI. LHP Blake Townsend (5-4) started and threw five scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks with one strikeout, to earn the win. LHP Cy Nielson (4.62) worked a scoreless ninth.

RHP Carlson Reed (2-4, 4.27) started and went 1⅔ innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on no hits and five walks. LHP Connor Oliver (4.98) followed with 3⅓ scoreless innings.
