The Pittsburgh Pirates moved into the top six of the 2025 MLB Draft lottery, getting the No. 6 overall pick Tuesday night during baseball’s winter meetings in Dallas.

The Pirates, who had retired catcher Jason Kendall representing them on the dais for the draft lottery special on MLB Network, had the sixth-best chance to win the draft lottery with 5.31% odds.

It marks the sixth consecutive season the Pirates will be drafting in the top 10, including a pair of No. 1 overall selections in catcher Henry Davis (2021) and right-handed pitcher Paul Skenes in (2023).

The Pirates also took New Mexico State shortstop Nick Gonzales (seventh in 2020) and prep shortstops Termarr Johnson (fourth in 2022) and Konnor Griffin (ninth in 2024) with their other top-10 selections under general manager Ben Cherington.

The Washington Nationals won the lottery for the first pick, followed by the Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners, Colorado Rockies and St. Louis Cardinals. The Nationals have had the No. 1 overall pick twice, drafting Stephen Strasburg in 2009 and Bryce Harper in 2010.
