Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton filled another vacancy on his coaching staff Friday, as the team announced the hiring of Tarrik Brock as its new first base coach.
Brock, 45, has been minor league outfier/baserunning coordinator for the Los Angeles Dodgers for the past three seasons. Before that, he was a first base coach and baserunning coordinator for the San Diego Padres and Houston Astros.
Brock spent most of his playing career in the minors, appearing in 13 big league games with the Chicago Cubs in 2000.
Brock replaces Kimera Bartee, who was the first base coach and outfield/baserunning coordinator for the Pirates for the past three seasons. All told, he was a coach in the Pirates system for 12 years.
Brock joins pitching coach Oscar Marin and bench coach Don Kelly as new hires on Shelton’s staff. Third base coach Joey Cora, hitting coach Rick Eckstein and assistant pitching coach Justin Meccage will be holdovers from Clint Hurdle’s staff.
