Middle infielder Liover Peguero, ranked No. 7 among Pittsburgh Pirates prospects by MLB Pipeline, was promoted Tuesday from Double-A Altoona to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Acquired before the 2020 season in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks for Starling Marte, Peguero, 22, was slashing .260/.333/.453 this season, his second in Altoona, with 32 extra-base hits among his total of 74. He has recorded 11 home runs, 20 doubles, one triple and 34 RBIs. He also has stolen 19 bases in 22 attempts.
Peguero was 4 for 5 with two home runs, a double and single in a 6-5 loss to the Harrisburg Senators on June 28. Since then, he has one hit in his past 20 at-bats. He was 1 for 3 with a walk and two strikeouts in a brief call-up with the Pirates last year at PNC Park,.
Also in Indianapolis, Pirates left-handed relief pitcher Jose Hernandez began a rehab assignment with the Indians on Tuesday night. He was scheduled to start their game against the Memphis Redbirds. It was Hernandez’s Triple-A debut.
The Pirates placed Hernandez on the 15-day injured list (right calf strain) on June 18. He appeared in 26 games for the Pirates, going 0-1 with a 2.63 ERA, 28 strikeouts and a 1.02 WHIP in 27 innings.
Hernandez, 25, was selected by the Pirates from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the major-league phase of the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 7.
In another minor-league move, infielder Jackson Glenn was promoted from Single-A Greensboro, where he was hitting .299, to Altoona.
